On October 31, in Basu County, Changdu City, Xizang, with an altitude of 5200 meters, Datang Basu Wind Power Station, the highest wind power project in the world, was officially put into full production.

The highest point of Datang Basu Wind Power Station is 5200 meters above sea level, and the highest altitude of the engine room is 5305 meters. It is currently the highest altitude wind power project in the world that has been built and put into operation. The project installs a total of 20 wind turbines, with a hub center height of 110 meters and an impeller diameter of 195 meters. The maximum sweeping area of the blades exceeds 30000 square meters, equivalent to the area of four standard football fields. At full wind speed, a single unit can generate 9.5 kilowatt hours of electricity per revolution.

Wang Honglang, the commander-in-chief of Datang Basu Wind Power Project, introduced that after the project is put into operation, it can add more than 223 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity per year, save about 73100 tons of standard coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 182800 tons, and meet the annual electricity consumption of 230000 people. It can effectively improve the energy structure of the Xizang Autonomous Region while ensuring the safety of heating and power supply for the people in winter.

The first batch of independent grid structured energy storage projects in Xizang will be connected to the grid for power generation

Not only wind power projects, on October 31, Datang Ali independent grid type energy storage and supply guarantee project had completed all main construction and had grid connection conditions, which marked that the first batch of independent grid type energy storage power plants in Xizang were about to be put into operation.

The independent grid type energy storage power station is equivalent to a stable power grid "power bank". When the surrounding lines fail, the energy storage power station can spontaneously start to supply power to the grid. The Datang Ali independent grid type energy storage and supply guarantee project is located in Gar County, Ali region, with an average altitude of 4282 meters. It will construct a 60 MW/300 MWh energy storage power station, which means it can store 300000 kWh of electricity at once and also provide reverse power supply of 280000 kWh to the grid.

The Ali region has abundant renewable energy resources, and energy storage projects can make up for the shortcomings of intermittent power supply from new energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics, and better store and utilize clean energy. After the project is put into operation, it can add more than 20 million kilowatt hours of clean energy annually, which can effectively fill the power and electricity gap in the Ali region.

Zhang Yajun, the manager of the independent grid type energy storage and supply guarantee project department in Datang Ali region, introduced that after the project is put into operation, it can provide about 280000 kWh of electricity per day, and 60 battery warehouses can solve the electricity needs of tens of thousands of households in Ali region.

Enabling the Roof of the World Xizang to Accelerate the Development of Clean Energy

Basu Wind Power and Ali Energy Storage Project are only part of the new energy development in Xizang since 2024. Xizang is building a new power system demonstration area and a high-level national clean energy base under the guidance of major national projects.

Since 2024, the Xizang Autonomous Region has increased the construction of wind power, photovoltaic and other clean energy projects in accordance with the energy development strategy of building "one base and two demonstrations". A large number of wind and solar new energy projects, such as Three Gorges Cuomei Wind Power, Datang Basu Wind Power, and Huadian Chabala Photovoltaic, have been put into operation for power generation. China National Nuclear Corporation's Sakya Wind and Solar Integration and 41 power supply guarantee projects are accelerating construction.

Up to now, the installed power capacity of Xizang has exceeded 8 million kilowatts, and the installed power capacity under construction has exceeded 27 million kilowatts. Among them, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power has reached 3.46 million kilowatts, the installed capacity of wind power has reached 180000 kilowatts, and the proportion of clean energy installed capacity has reached 96%, ranking first in the country.

From the power consumption side, from January to September 2024, Xizang's total social power consumption will be 10.9 billion kWh, up 15% year on year; The total power generation in the region was 13.8 billion kilowatt hours, a year-on-year increase of 6%. Up to now, Xizang has delivered more than 20 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity.

Next, by the end of the 14th Five Year Plan period, we aim to achieve an installed power capacity of over 11.5 million kilowatts, an installed power capacity under construction of over 30 million kilowatts, and an external transmission capacity of over 5 million kilowatts.
